FACTUAL REVIEW: A Visitors Guide to Tudor England - Suzannah Lipscombe

Release Date: 15/03/12

SYNOPSIS:

For the armchair traveller or those looking for inspiration for a day out, The Visitor's Companion to Tudor England takes you to palaces, castles, theatres and abbeys to uncover the stories behind Tudor England. Susannah Lipscomb visits over fifty Tudor places, from the famous palace at Hampton Court where dangerous court intrigue was rife, to less well-known houses, such as Anne Boleyn's childhood home at Hever Castle or Tutbury Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.

In the corridors of power and the courtyards of country houses we meet the passionate but tragic Kateryn Parr, Henry VIII's last wife, Lady Jane Grey the nine-day queen, and hear how Sir Walter Raleigh planned his trip to the New World. Through the places that defined them, this lively and engaging book reveals the rich history of the Tudors and paints a vivid and captivating picture of what it would have been like to live in Tudor England.

REVIEW:

There’s an old saying that those who don’t learn by history are doomed to repeat it. As such I can think of no better way to start a review of this title by Suzannah than that. As this book takes the reader firmly by the hand and brings Tudor England to life through stories of the times and those concerned. What makes this book better however is the fact that they author features tales of places where you can go to not only get a flavour but see what she’s talking about.

It really does bring history to life and for me, I can think of no better way to get my nephews into it than by utilising the skills of people like the author. All in the book is well written, easy to follow and with great characters to associate with alongside information placed within easily memorable text, it’s a title that entertains and educates which to be honest is no better way to help you get into it. Cracking fun all round and a book I’ll be rereading quite a few times and one that will travel with me as I get the fuller flavour to accompany it.
